Atlanta School Guides, Fact or Fiction

What are the best schools in Atlanta? Well it depends on who you ask. If you ask a parent, they are going to give you their own "world view" of the school system. Ask a disgruntled parent and they will tell you the school is pure evil, ask the valedictorian's parents and you'll get a completely different story. Ask a new teacher and she's overwhelmed, ask a retiring teacher and he may be burned out. Ask a principal and everything is grand! You get the idea.

Newsweek just came out with its "America's Top Public High Schools" list for the United States. A link to the Georgia schools is provided below. As I gazed the list,  there are several familiar names: Walton, Pope, Lassiter, Harrison, Centennial, Dekalb School for the Arts, etc.  However, many schools were left off the list for some reason or another. Part of the reason is how the data was gathered and what criteria were used to rate the schools.

There are some wonderful resources for schools on our website, but as a parent, you really need to first determine what criteria was used in the rankings. In the Newsweek article, they used the total number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate/Cambridge tests and divided by the number of students. Be warned, some of the highest ranking schools have magnet programs that attract bright talent from all over the county's districts. This of course may count as "Advanced Placement" and therefore skew the results.

I guess what I'm saying is as a parent, look at all angles when determining the best schools. In my opinion, nothing beats doing good research and then visiting the school and talk to parents, principals, and students. You'll know simply by the environment whether the school fits you or not.
